Sam wasn’t a developer. He just built a website for a friend—and something clicked. That one project led to a Coder’s Guild bootcamp, a funded apprenticeship, and a career in DevOps. Now he’s solving real engineering problems and shaping the future of tech, his way.
Download this case study as a PDFSam Roberts didn’t take the traditional path into tech. With a varied work background, his interest in digital skills was ignited when he helped a friend build a basic website as a favour. That small project sparked a much bigger change.
Looking for structured support, Sam found The Coder’s Guild. What followed was a life-changing bootcamp and a 15-month apprenticeship that launched him into DevOps and software engineering.
Not everyone thrives in front-end development. Sam quickly discovered that while he enjoyed logic and problem-solving, designing layouts wasn’t for him. The apprenticeship gave him space to explore, and he found that DevOps suited him perfectly.
“I get bored easily. DevOps kept me on my toes. It’s varied, technical and rewarding.”
Sam lives with Tourette’s Syndrome. Remote learning helped when tics were heightened, and The Coder’s Guild gave him opportunities to speak publicly—something he never thought he’d be able to do.
“I suffer from Tourette’s and thought it might be inspiring for someone else to know it doesn’t have to hold you back.”
Support from mentors and peers helped Sam overcome imposter syndrome and build the confidence to contribute.
Sam eventually joined a real engineering team, where he was trusted to build a monitoring tool for production releases—an original solution that the team still uses.
“It was mine, start to finish. That meant a lot.”
When Sam lost a friend during the bootcamp, the team helped him catch up. That sense of community stuck with him.
“I wouldn’t have made it through without Frankie and Steve. That kind of support changes everything.”
Today, Sam works alongside computer science graduates, but brings with him the benefit of lived experience and real project delivery.

The course was incredibly well put together and support on hand from tutors was practically available round the clock. The standout thing for me wasn’t just learning the course material itself, but the way I’ve finished the course and have a set way of thinking like a programmer thanks to Steve and the rest of the tutors. I have already recommended this course and most certainly will do again. The post course support from Frankie is fantastic, too.
